Every person—including myself—carries the Imago Dei, the image of God. We are created for relationships with God and with one another, reflecting something of His character through love, kindness, and compassion. Yet because of sin, our relationships are not always what they were meant to be. Feelings like envy and comparison often find their way into our lives, reminding us that we are still learning what it means to love well.
This reflection was born from a recent social media video that attracted my attention. In the video, a young woman shared that she had once felt envy toward a close friend who seemed to have many of the things she desired. I have heard many stories about jealousy before, but seldom from the person willing to say, “I was the jealous one.”
James 5:16 (ESV) instructs believers to “confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.
As I continued reflecting on the video and the reactions surrounding it, I began to notice something else. Moments of honesty often reveal as much about those listening as they do about the person speaking. They expose not only what has been confessed, but also how we respond when vulnerability appears before us. Some immediately search for explanations or corrections, while others simply sit with what has been shared.
Perhaps that is why confession can feel so uncomfortable. It does not only reveals something about the confessor. It often reveals something about those listening as well.
Glory be to God, throughout Scripture, He seems to walk with us patiently as our understanding hardly comes all at once. Instead, truth grows slowly, helping us see what was already there.
As I thought about this, I realized these moments are not just about someone else. They invite me to look at my own heart too, reminding me that God is patiently showing what is inside each of us. And I am reminded of the assurance found in Philippians 1:6, that the One who begins a good work in us is faithful to bring it to completion.
While this reflection comes from my own curiosity and ongoing journey of finding God in everything, I hope the young lady will receive the quiet desire of her heart.
