Can a country enforce its laws and still be humane and just? I keep returning to this question, especially as an immigrant of faith.
“One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
I continue to learn that Scripture does not ignore law, but it never lets law take the place of love. Again and again, God establishes order while reminding His people not to forget the sojourner—the outsider living among them—as well as the widow and the orphan. Scripture shows me that He never separates mercy from justice.
This is what disturbed me as I watched the news. I understand why we have laws, borders, systems, and responsibility. I am clear about that. What I continue to wrestle with is the attitude we can bring to these conversations. My faith keeps asking me not just, Is this lawful? but also, Is this faithful? Perhaps the question is whether our pursuit of what is lawful reflects the character of the God who is both just and merciful. I am still learning how to hold these truths together.
I also see that Jesus never rejected order, but He always cared about how power was used. He noticed those who were overlooked, burdened, or crushed by the way authority was exercised. He did not judge righteousness by efficiency. I wonder if our systems do the same today.
As an immigrant, I feel both gratitude and unease at the same time. I know what it is to respect a country and still wish it could be kinder. I know what it is to follow rules and still feel the uncertainty that can accompany them. Faith does not shame this tension. It recognizes it.
Scripture makes it clear that authority is accountable not just to law, but also to God’s character. And God’s character is marked by perfect justice, unwavering mercy, and a special concern for those with the least power. So I do not think enforcing the law is wrong, but I do believe that enforcement without compassion falls short of the justice God desires.
Fear is not justice. Humiliation is not order. Collateral damage is not righteousness.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.” — Psalm 89:14
